Pocahontas, 1911

The bustling coal town of Pocahontas, started in the 1880s, was still growing when this aerial view of the town was drawn.  At upper right is the Pocahontas High School, which was replaced in the 1950s but stood until it was demolished in 2004.  Near it is historic St. Elizabeth's Catholic Church, 1896, a major tourist attraction in the town.  Very few of the large structures downtown remain standing, having burned or collapsed over the years from disuse.  The town once had more than 5,000 residents but now has about 300.
